Disappointment for McGivern

James McGivern's hopes of a European Games medal were ended by Hovhannes Bachkov on Tuesday.

McGivern was hoping to join his Ireland team-mates Regan Buckley, Grainne Walsh, Kurt Walker, Kellie Harrington and Micheala Walsh in the quarter-finals, but he was beaten by reigning European champion and world bronze-medallist in the last 16 of the light welterweight division.

Bachkov proved too strong for the Irish boxer, earning an unanimous points win - 30-27, 30-26, 30-27, 30-27, 30-25 - to progress to the last eight.

“He was just relentless. It was hard to get my game plan off. We worked on staying in close, but he is European champion and this is my first Elite tournament," McGivern commented.

“It’s a learning experience. We’ll take it on the chin and go back and learn. The coaches will look at it and I am sure they will see what went wrong- I’ll get it next time.

"The first (fight) was brilliant. Even (this fight) I was doing things I don’t normally do. I don’t usually fight in close, but I was doing it there because I was forced to, which I take the positives from. I have that capability now. At least we go way now back to the gym work on making things perfect and then no one is going to beat me.”

Elsewhere, in cycling Ireland's Ryan Mullen narrowly missed out on a medal in the Men's Time Trial as he finished fourth in a time of 33:41:43, one second off bronze, while Michael O'Loughlin was sixth.

In badminton, Nhat Nguyen was beaten 21-18, 20-22, 13-21 by Spain's Pablo Abian and he must now defeat Luka Wraber to have any chance of progressing to the last 16.

There was disappointment for Josh Magee and Paul Reynolds in the men's doubles as they were beaten 10-21, 8-21 by France, while Chloe and Sam Magee were edged out 22-20, 19-21, 16-21 by the French in the mixed doubles.
